Bay Ridge crime wave -- burglaries up 60%

Just a heads up. The Brooklyn Paper is reporting that there's been a spike in burglaries in Bay Ridge over the past month, particularly in our neighborhood.
I take the dogs out for their last walk between 12:30am and 2am and have seen a dramatic increase in marked and unmarked NYPD patrols in the neighborhood, especially after midnight. They've even checked me out. Two nights ago, cops were searching a back yard on 67th and Sedgwick. Three nights ago, it was the alley between 69th and 70th off Colonial. Last night, an RMP was parked, lights out, at the bottom of Senator. NYPD is also doing frequent night patrols of Owls Head Park.
According to Rodriguez in a recent town hall meeting, most of these burglaries are happening between 6pm and 2am. And while 4th to 7th Ave is the prime area, there have been break-ins west of Ridge too.
What I've heard is that the perpetrators aren't professionals, mostly druggies looking for targets of opportunity. Make sure your basement windows and doors are locked and any window air conditioners are secured.
During a 28-day period starting on Sept. 5, crooks broke into 39 residences in Bay Ridge — an increase of more than 60 percent compared to the same four-week periods in 2007 and 2006, when there were 24 and 21 burglaries respectively.
The majority of the burglaries occurred between 65th and 86th streets and Fourth and Seventh avenues, said Deputy Inspector Eric Rodriguez, commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, at an Oct. 16 town hall meeting on crime.
“Most of the burglaries are rear window and they are very difficult to police,” said Rodriguez, who noted that in all but three break-ins, the crooks got in from the back of the home.
“These guys push the screen right in and go in the house…they are targeting jewelry cash and electronics,” he added.
